The Celebrity Shopping Trolley - Janet Ellis
Blue Peter's Janet Ellis And One She Made Earlier
Has European Parachute Free Fall Champion fallen from grace?
Michael doesn't think so, even though Janet Ellis does like chocolate, croissants and custard.
I have worked with Blue Peter presenters Val Singleton, Lesley Judd, Sarah Greene and Caron Keating and like Janet Ellis they had boundless enthusiasm and an interest in healthy eating. Just to prove the point Janet made an amazing 20000 feet record-breaking freefall parachute jump while she was presenting the show.
Janet's breakfast is two slices of toasted Burgen Soya and Linseed bread with honey, or muesli with yoghurt and both with a cup of tea. These provide slow release energy, protein and fibre; both good choices.
I have advised soy and seeds for years. Their natural phyto oestrogens help compensate for the loss of hormones during and after the menopause. Consequently they offer some protection against osteoporosis and breast cancer.
Lunch choices are a sandwich of Burgen Soya & Linseed bread - or home-made soup with toast, I guess from the same bread. Home-made soups are the best nutritional value for money, but we don't know what's in the sandwich, I presume something pretty healthy.
Dinner is usually roast chicken (resist the skin, it's full of fat), mashed potatoes and lots of vegetables or fish, new potatoes and a salad. Sea Bass is one of Janet's favourites and mine too. Try steaming with cubed potatoes, turnips, carrots and shredded cabbage. Cook together with a sprig of dill for a delicious Superfood meal.
Almonds and fruit are excellent snacks. Fresh nuts provide heart healthy oils, some hormone-like good chemicals, protein, minerals and fibre, but not roast and salted.
Elderflower drinks and a glass of wine most nights are perfect, two glasses of wine a day protect against heart disease and strokes – more increases the risks.
Janet believes "everything in moderation," doesn't have any intolerances, and keeps up to date with information that improves her diet. She is going through the menopause, so extra Soya and linseed are important.
The 5 things always in the trolley are Garlic, honey, olive oil, Burgen Soya & Linseed bread – and chocolate! Her 3 food vices are Chocolate (most days) croissants (some weekends) and custard (when grandsons visit). Great regulars and even the vices are not that bad.
Janet is an Ambassador for the Burgen bread, and it's great to encourage women to eat more Soya and seeds, but not to the exclusion of wholemeal breads. Burgen bread is pretty high in salt and four slices contain almost 25% of the safe daily total.
Watch those croissants, a butter one contains 300 calories and 10g of fat and that's before you add the honey!
Janet has had health problems in the past including 10 miscarriages. These take a toll on the metabolic and hormone systems as well as an almost unsupportable emotional level of trauma. My first wife lost two babies and that was awful, but I can't imagine how you coped. These events make it all the more important to take extra care of your hormones now, so I would suggest some Soya beans and tofu and plenty of oily fish as good additions to your diet so you stay fit and active to enjoy your grandchildren.
I hope you have passed your eating habits onto your daughter, singer Sophie Ellis Bextor, and your other children so they will be as healthy as you.
